Linkbaiting is about gaining reputation, finding your niche, writing useful and creative content, presenting your ideas, publishing them on the Web and finding people who might actually use them. You won’t find your readers if you concentrate on building links; you will be able to build links organically if you concentrate on your readers. Moreover, you can gain reputation if and only if you focus on your readers. This is one of the basic principles of successful blogging.

PageRank Tools

Google PageRank is very much like the size of a man's you-know-what. Everyone thinks it's important, no one admits it's important (unless they have a huge one) and everyone is interested in the size of everyone else's.

In researching website optimization, I came across PageRank size for the first time and was amazed about how many people obsessed about it. Obviously everyone wants a larger one and there are various methods of increasing it - some proven, some painful, and some downright silly.

But let me explain what PageRank is first.PageRank is one of the many factors Google takes into account when it returns the results for a search term. It is, in effect, Google's evaluation of how important a site is. The main element in this is the number of sites linking to your site and their PageRank size. This can be viewed as a popularity contest with the sites with the bigger PageRanks getting bigger votes (ain't that always the way).

The upshot of this is that sites with, a small PageRank cannot get close to the top of the results when popular keywords are searched upon, and have to rely on more specific keywords to get traffic from search engines.

PageRank is measured from 0-10. Sites can be out into three categories: PageRank 0-2 - New websites that are just starting out. Websites that have come to terms with the size of their PageRank and have given up trying to increase it (but secretly hope it'll still grow over time). Bad boys who have broken the rules.

PageRank 3-6 - Established websites that have proven they can perform. Niche websites that have a big enough PageRank to do what they need it to do.

PageRank 7-10 - Some of these guys' PageRank is so big it'll knock you over if they turn too quickly. In order to compete with this PageRank, one needs to develop other techniques to establish your own area of specialist expertise.

In order to not get their PageRank laughed at, webmasters are constantly looking to increase it. Here are a few ways to stretch that PageRank.

Increase the Size of Your Site - By increasing the number of pages on the site, it increases the amount of PageRank the webmaster can play with. If those pages point internally then it can increase the PageRank of those pages for instance. However, you should be careful that you don't create pages with no real value or content, as one can be punished for that.

Exposure - Advertising your website is a core piece of your strategy. However, to really increase that PageRank, you need incoming, permanent, links not occasional pay-per-click ads or banners that can change day-to-day or week-to-week. Ways to do this include, writing high quality articles that get published on a number of sites , being active in forams associated with the subject of your website, and forming a group in one or more of the social websites. But beware! Over-exposure can be detrimental to your PageRank too, if you are deemed to be spamming.

There are also a number of things you should avoid that may shrink your PageRank. Getting caught with your pants down - Anything that Google prohibits (and there is a lot) can adversely affect your PageRank if they catch you in the act. So keep your nose clean and make sure you understand the rules.
Gratuitous Linking - Simply exchanging links with other sites doesn't really have an effect on your PageRank (although it still might generate traffic) and using "link farms" can have a negative effect.

There is a small but vocal group that says you shouldn't worry about the size of it and just concentrate on providing good content for your visitors. This is the equivalent of "the size doesn't matter, it's what you do with it". The reality is that people visit your website because of what's on it, but they won't visit if they don't know it's there - so a balance is needed.
In summary, PageRank is a very important aspect but to obsess over it means you won't satisfy your visitors in other areas, which might be important to them. If it is that important to you, you need to get out and meet people!
If it's big enough to do the job, be happy.

PageRank Tools That Work

If your wondering how to Build or get Links, heres a guide to buying links
Loren Baker from Search Engine Journal wrote a great guide to buying links, directory listings, and paid reviews for blogs. Loren does a great job of breaking down all the different vendors that sell links, she writes about paid reviews, and directory listings. Loren also covers tips for purchasing links from these sources.

Here is what he had to say about Buy Links

Sell Ad Space

Monetize Your Site

$100 in FREE LinksText Link Ads is probably the most popular of the link ad companies, with over 10,000 publishers in their network and a lot of promotions and advertising on SEO and publisher industry blogs and sites. Link prices are based upon the authority of each site and charged per month.

ReviewMe is a more targeted approach to paid blogger reviews. Advertisers are given access to ReviewMe’s lists of niche publishers, and can request reviews on specific blogs (and only those blogs),That's very valuble and works great for your PR. instead of using the mass review approach. The end result is more thoughtful content and reviews of your products, for a higher price. Pricing is set per blog and based upon that blog’s popularity, readership and incoming links. So it Will fluckuate.

Hear's a great way to find valuable links using Google. Buying text links is a common thing that many companies are doing to raise theire traffic and search engine rankings. Most people buy text links based on if they feel a website has a high Google PageRank. This could work, but if you are trying to increase your rankings for a specific term why not buy the most relevant link based on what Google thinks?

Say you want to get ranked for the keyword "web hosting". Do a Google search for the term and look for all the websites that rank in the top 100.

Many of these sites will be your competition and you are going to be fighting them for traffic, but there are going to be a ton of sites that are not your competitors.

If you wanted to rank high for a term, what could be a more relevant link then from a web page that already ranks well for that term? You don't need the link on every page of that site; you just need it on the page that ranks well for the terms you want your site to rank for. Although this may seem like common sense, there are a lot of people who ignore this little trick. It works and works well.Artical courtesy of

The Delay Of PageRank Update

“It has come to our attention that there is a widespread outbreak of concerned webmasters talking about the future of the Google PageRank system. The delay
as many have called it of the PageRank update is nothing of the sort. There are certain circumstances that have caused the present update to take longer to propagate than past updates.

New search engine algorithm changes are taking place which have affected the PageRank update. We recommend that all webmasters and website visitors in general continue on with business as usual. The PageRank update will occur when the new algorithm changes are fully functional and pass quality assurance checks.

On a side note the new algorithm changes consist of new filters to block automated spam websites. We are also focusing on websites that blatantly sell text links with the sole intention of boosting a specific websites PageRank. There are several factors that will be used to help us determine if a website is selling text links to boost the linked websites PageRank. Websites that are flagged for selling text links will receive an immediate drop in PageRank viewable by the Google PageRank tool bar, search engine rankings will suffer and the website will be removed from our index. Most live websites that are currently going to be effected by this have already realized at least two of the penalties above.

We recommend that you follow the Google webmaster guidelines to prevent your website from being penalized.”

A Tool To Manage PageRank Distrubution

Half's SEO Notebook blog wrote a detailed post explaining his PageRankBot tool.
After reading the post, it appears that this tool does some pretty intricate and detailed analysis of your internal navigation and helps you determine how to make adjustments to your link development to best allocate your most important pages in the search results.

I understand that toolbar PageRank is not the answer to all SEO problems. But it is somewhat of a sign and like the blog post said, if you are a control freak, this tool may be for you.

In short, this tool enables you see and control PageRank distribution in a more informed manner.

Google Wants Feedback on Removing PageRank Score

Yesterday, Search Engine Roundtable reported on the WebmasterWorld discussion about removing the PageRank tool.

After a bit of feedback, Adam Lasnik of Google has written on the thread, where he emphasizes the importance of PageRank.

PageRank is an important signal and remains one of many effective measures of quality, but admittedly it's often viewed and used/abused in ways that run contrary to the interests of searchers and webmasters. Still, a lot of folks find the PR information useful; it provides a great incentive to try out our toolbar and explore its other features as well.
But more importantly, Adam solicits advice from the community to offer feedback on what they'd rather see instead:

Given that many of you aren't so fond of PR info in the toolbar, I'd love to know what feature you woudl like to see. Mandatory criteria:
- Would have to provide actionable info for webmasters
- Would need to be useful and interesting for the ~99.9% of users who aren't webmasters

Of course, that just brings up the suggestion of providing up-to-date and accurate PageRank data -- all the time. I've even heard that at Search Engine Strategies conferences. This is what the webmasters want, and it should appeal to those who are not webmasters.

Other suggestions include a page quality indicator (as long as it's kept current).

The forum discussion is still ongoing and quite interesting. Check it out at WebmasterWorld.

Google Caught Selling High PageRank Links, Again

Google is buying marketshare for Google Checkout by profiling merchants who use it, and giving them free high PageRank links from Google sites. The Google Checkout blog, currently a PageRank 8 site, recently posted about the success of GolfBalls.com on their blog.

Caught Selling High PageRank Links
Not only does that post provide direct links, one one of the links is a deep link with targeted anchor text.

The blog post about GolfBalls.com contains the following passage:
In addition, Google Checkout helps make it even easier for consumers to find us when they search for items like Titleist Pro V1 Golf Balls by displaying the Google Checkout badge next to our search results.
They talk about searching for an item, and instead point that link at a product page on GolfBalls.com. That is like me telling you to search Google for something then dropping an eBay affiliate link in the post.

If Google does something like that it is a co-brand cross promotion, and all is well. If I do something like that it is an attempt to manipulate Google and/or a spammy link buy.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying I would do it differently than Google is doing it. I would just like to remind Google engineers that they would call me as a spammer if I did the same things they do to make their business model work.

This is a mistake Google has made many times in the past.

How can Google ask webmasters to police paid links then do that kind of crap? What a bunch of hypocritical garbage.

Google May Drop PageRank Feature

Google is considering removing PageRank from its toolbar, reports Search Engine Journal. PageRank's at-a-glance determination of a site's importance has been thought indispensable to the SEO efforts of many a short-cutting consultant.

By giving pages a rank between 1 and 10, PageRank has become a shorthand means of determining the "importance" of a site per Google's algorithm.

Strong sites featuring relevant, information-rich and frequently-updated content, for example, typically bear a rank of 5-7. Yahoo's homepage has a PageRank of 10.

Google has said outdated numbers, bug-ridden updates and more are behind the impetus to drop PageRank from the Google Toolbar. The data will still exist, but simply not appear to Toolbar users.

Google also cites the use of PageRank as an incentive to trade links - a practice frowned-upon by Google - as more as people try to raise site scores.

Google's Adam Lasnk is asking people for input on how to make PageRank more useful. These include being useful to webmasters and non-webmasters alike.

PageRank plays a large role in search engine marketing as webmasters look to boost rankings in order to show up higher in search results.

Google, Yahoo & MSN Fight Blog Spam

Google, Yahoo & MSN Fight Blog Spam
With all the talk of "search wars" over the past year, you wouldn't expect to read a news story about the three major search engine competitors working together. But that is the case today. Google, Yahoo and MSN have joined forces to fight the comment spam that has become the plague of many bloggers.

What is comment spam? Think of it as an evolution of guestbook spam. Chances are you've seen it. Perhaps you've even been a victim of it. Luckily, the biggest names in the search engine and blog industries have caught onto it. Comment spam occurs when misguided webmasters, in an effort to raise their search engine rankings by increasing the number of backlinks pointing to their sites, begin posting random links to their sites as comments on other people's blog entries. Ironically, it would be a lot easier, less tedious and probably more effective for these spammers to just join a link exchange program and fully automate their link exchange efforts.

Google, Yahoo and MSN will now be incorporating a new attribute (rel="nofollow") that will tell their spiders to discredit links in blog comments so that spammers will get no benefit whatsoever.

Many of the leading providers of blog software have already agreed to participate, including LiveJournal, Blogger, and MSN Spaces.

Pagerank Tools Tips And Facts

Ideal link exchange should be done with your partner websites that are relevant to your web site theme. It is sometimes hard to find many web sites that are similar to yours. What's more, you may end up helping your competitors. However, the better way to exchange links is always the issue of relevancy. Though pagerank will still increase as long as you do the link exchange, focusing on the relevancy of your site and partner's site is something you should not ignore. Ideally, your outbound links should be to relevant web sites more than the outbound links that go to irrelevant sites

WHAT IS PAGERANK

Google Toolbar

An example of the PageRank indicator as found on the Google toolbar. The Google Toolbar's PageRank feature displays a visited page's PageRank as a whole number between 0 and 10. The most popular websites have a PageRank of 10. The least have a PageRank of 0. Google has not disclosed the precise method for determining a Toolbar PageRank value. Google representative Matt Cutts has publicly indicated that the Toolbar PageRank values are republished about once every three months, indicating that the Toolbar PageRank values are historical rather than real-time values
