How Google PageRank is Calculated
Okay now we are to the Google PageRank Calculations, this is very simple so pay attention, I learned it over night, not really. The factors about Google PageRank Calculation is that no one knows exactly how it works, but people have discovered over time somewhat how it works, but lets get into an example.

PR(A) = (1-d) + d(PR(t1)/C(t1) + ... + PR(tn)/C(tn))
Above is a Google PageRank algo. that was released in the development of Google algo. Thats right the actualy algo equitation . Which google is not telling us what it does, but that does not matter because the equatation is good enough.

In the equation 't1 - tn' are pages linking to page A, 'C' is the number of outbound links that a page has and 'd' is a damping factor, usually set to 0.85.

A more simpler way to think of it is:

a page's PageRank = 0.15 + 0.85 * (a "share" of the PageRank of every page that links to it)
Share = The linking page's PageRank is divided by the number of outbound links

A page "votes" an amount of PageRank onto each page that it links to. The amount of PageRank that it has to vote with is a little less than its own PageRank value (its own value * 0.85). This value will be shared equally between all pages

Therefore; it would be better to get a page linked to you that has a PageRank of 5 with 2 outbound links then it would be to have a page linked to you with a PageRank of 8 with 500 outbound links, but don't get me wrong. It would be better to have both pages linked to you, but if you was to take your choice, think about it.

Now the Google PageRank algorithm is based between a pr of 1 to 10, but many people believe that numbers are set to a algo logarithmic scale. Which there is a very good reason to believe this, but no one knows for sure outside of google, now there has probably been people that have figured it out somewhat, but to be sure, you would of had to write the Google PageRank algorithm your self.

Google PageRank was developed at Standford University by Larry Page, and Sergery Brin. This was part of a research project for these two individuals. The project was started in 1995 and then was led to a functional prototype. In 1998, Google was founded.

There are many ways that this keyword list could be helpful to you if you’re a search engine marketer. The obvious use would first be to use it in a PPC (pay per click) campaign. You could also use these keywords if you were a trying to sell search engine optimization services on your own site: integrate these keywords into title tags, meta tags, and, of course, the body copy. The Latest On Using NoFollow To Manage PageRank Flow

Recently, in a conversation that Matt Cutts had with Rand Fishkin, Matt confirmed that Google does not see the use of NoFollow on your web sites as a spam tactic. Here are Matts exact words:

Using NoFollow to Manage PageRank flow

The nofollow attribute is just a mechanism that gives webmasters the ability to modify PageRank flow at link-level granularity. Plenty of other mechanisms would also work (e.g. a link through a page that is robot.txted out), but nofollow on individual links is simpler for some folks to use. Theres no stigma to using nofollow, even on your own internal links

NoFollow in the Footer Nav
This raises some interesting possibilities for using this as a tool to concentrate PageRank in the places where you want to concentrate it. To see what we can do with this, lets look at the SEOmoz blogs footer navigation for an example:

This is a fairly common looking footer. Note how the About, Our Services, Our Clients, and Contact links are in the footer nav, a design element that shows up on every page of the site. When you link to a pages from every page of your site, the search engine is likely to think that you are saying its one of your most important pages.

Clearly, from a business perspective, the Contact page is one of the most important pages on the site. However, there is no reason to expect that it will rank highly for important search terms, no matter how much link juice you give it. You may, or may not, want the page to be in the index, but you dont need to spend tons of PageRank on pages that will never rank.

A good solution for this is to use the NoFollow attribute on these four links. Note that you do not want to use the NoFollow metatag, because this will prevent the entire page from passing any link juice to any other page. This is not your goal.

In theory, this should signal Google that these pages should not be getting any link juice from the other pages of the site. If you want the pages to still be in the index, take one page, such as the home page, and do not apply the NoFollow attribute in the links to these pages from the home page. As a result, the search engines will still see the pages.

NoFollow in the Main Nav
Another application of NoFollow pages comes in when you are dealing with sites that cross link between product categories. Heres An Example

In this example using the Digital Camera HQ main navigation menu, you could imagine that the Price Range pages change a lot, and are not likely to rank highly in the engines no matter what you do. In addition, the cameras listed under Most Popular are key pages that you want to pass the most PageRank to.

Assuming that this is true, NoFollowing the links to the Price Range pages would be a smart idea. As a result, you would stop spending PageRank on those pages, and have more to allocate to the other pages in the main nav, such as the Most Popular, and the Camera Brand pages.

As before, if you still want the Price Range pages in the index, just not with so much link juice, then go ahead and find one page and link to it without the NoFollow attribute from the page. The home page is once again a great place to do this from.

Summary

Based on Matts statements to Rand, it seems like these strategies should work for your site. As with all things of this type in the SEO world, there is no real guarantee that this will help you, but, intuitively, it makes sense. In addition, given the care that Matt and other Googlers must take in their public statements, it seems likely that there is little risk in trying it out.

Ads becoming content is not only true from a thin affiliate site perspective, but also on larger more traditional ad buys. Selling content hosting is going mainstream.

About.com has been selling custom branded sponsored content for about a year. This WSJ page hawking Accenture is a PageRank 4, and this BizJournals lead generation page is also an indication of where sponsored content hosting is heading. How long will it be before you can log on to the WSJ ad platform and just buy a topic and upload a page?

A few months back Threadwatch had a post about Yahoo selling subdomains. Yesterday I stumbled across an AdSense ad for a company selling subdomains that they forward to other sites. I don't believe it is smart to build a big site on someone else's domain, but if you wanted to fling up a bunch of spam or create a single targeted ad page that goes after a competitive phrase why not leech of their authority and let them assume the risks?

There are no search engine guidelines on hosting advertisements for third parties because it is not an idea Google wants people thinking about or talking publicly about, and they can't edit out WSJ.com if they will want the WSJ to spread their public relations messages and business interests.

Matt Cutts Comments On Link Directorys And Where Google Stands

Matt Cutts, took some time to comment on DigitalPoint Forums and to try and clarify what Googles posisition on pagerank and directorys are , says Search Engine Roundtable.

Sayeth Matt on DigitalPoint: “Here’s what I’ve said about directories recently:

“Q: Hey, as long as we’re talking about directories, can you talk about the role of directories, some of whom charge for a reviewer to evaluate them?

A: I’ll try to give a few rules of thumb to think about when looking at a directory. When considering submitting to a directory, I’d ask questions like:

- Does the directory reject urls? If every url passes a review, the directory gets closer to just a list of links or a free-for-all link site.

- What is the quality of urls in the directory? Suppose a site rejects 25% of submissions, but the urls that are accepted/listed are still quite low-quality or spammy. That doesn’t speak well to the quality of the directory.

- If there is a fee, what’s the purpose of the fee? For a high-quality directory, the fee is primarily for the time/effort for someone to do a genuine evaluation of a url or site.

Those are a few factors I’d consider. If you put on your user hat and ask “Does this seem like a high-quality directory to me?” you can usually get a pretty good sense as well, or ask a few friends for their take on a particular directory.”

Many of these sites will be your competition and you are going to be fighting them for traffic, but there are going to be a ton of sites that are not your competitors.

If you wanted to rank high for a term, what could be a more relevant link then from a web page that already ranks well for that term? You don't need the link on every page of that site; you just need it on the page that ranks well for the terms you want your site to rank for. Squidoo Sites Link Back To Your Page Via Tags

Squidoo is a free service. They provide you with a tag based webpage that you can use for whatever you choose. The site is set up in such that many different areas of the squidoo site link back to your page via tags and other group llinks ect. This creates good backlinks immedialtly upon publishing your first page or as they call it: a Lens. Squidoo pages are used for vitually anything. Some Squidoo pages are used for bussiness opportunities and some are used to list grama's favorite recipies and anything inbetween. Squidoo also puts Adsense ads on all lens'es sitewide and splits the proceeds with the lens owner that the click came from! And remember the site is free! Squidoo also has pre-made modules for Amazon Ebay and others that you can add to your site and you can make money from those sales as well. The site allows HTML in all fields of the setup process. You can see your Squidoo lens in Google within two weeks without even submitting it to a single search engine!

The Delay Of PageRank Update

A Tool To Manage PageRank Distrubution

Half's SEO Notebook blog wrote a detailed post explaining his PageRankBot tool.
After reading the post, it appears that this tool does some pretty intricate and detailed analysis of your internal navigation and helps you determine how to make adjustments to your link development to best allocate your most important pages in the search results.

I understand that toolbar PageRank is not the answer to all SEO problems. But it is somewhat of a sign and like the blog post said, if you are a control freak, this tool may be for you.

In short, this tool enables you see and control PageRank distribution in a more informed manner.

Google Wants Feedback on Removing PageRank Score

Yesterday, Search Engine Roundtable reported on the WebmasterWorld discussion about removing the PageRank tool.

After a bit of feedback, Adam Lasnik of Google has written on the thread, where he emphasizes the importance of PageRank.

PageRank is an important signal and remains one of many effective measures of quality, but admittedly it's often viewed and used/abused in ways that run contrary to the interests of searchers and webmasters. Still, a lot of folks find the PR information useful; it provides a great incentive to try out our toolbar and explore its other features as well.
But more importantly, Adam solicits advice from the community to offer feedback on what they'd rather see instead:

Given that many of you aren't so fond of PR info in the toolbar, I'd love to know what feature you woudl like to see. Mandatory criteria:
- Would have to provide actionable info for webmasters
- Would need to be useful and interesting for the ~99.9% of users who aren't webmasters

Of course, that just brings up the suggestion of providing up-to-date and accurate PageRank data -- all the time. I've even heard that at Search Engine Strategies conferences. This is what the webmasters want, and it should appeal to those who are not webmasters.

Other suggestions include a page quality indicator (as long as it's kept current).

Google Caught Selling High PageRank Links, Again

Google is buying marketshare for Google Checkout by profiling merchants who use it, and giving them free high PageRank links from Google sites. The Google Checkout blog, currently a PageRank 8 site, recently posted about the success of GolfBalls.com on their blog.

Caught Selling High PageRank Links
Not only does that post provide direct links, one one of the links is a deep link with targeted anchor text.

The blog post about GolfBalls.com contains the following passage:
In addition, Google Checkout helps make it even easier for consumers to find us when they search for items like Titleist Pro V1 Golf Balls by displaying the Google Checkout badge next to our search results.
They talk about searching for an item, and instead point that link at a product page on GolfBalls.com. That is like me telling you to search Google for something then dropping an eBay affiliate link in the post.

If Google does something like that it is a co-brand cross promotion, and all is well. If I do something like that it is an attempt to manipulate Google and/or a spammy link buy.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying I would do it differently than Google is doing it. I would just like to remind Google engineers that they would call me as a spammer if I did the same things they do to make their business model work.

This is a mistake Google has made many times in the past.

How can Google ask webmasters to police paid links then do that kind of crap? What a bunch of hypocritical garbage.

Google May Drop PageRank Feature

Google is considering removing PageRank from its toolbar, reports Search Engine Journal. PageRank's at-a-glance determination of a site's importance has been thought indispensable to the SEO efforts of many a short-cutting consultant.

By giving pages a rank between 1 and 10, PageRank has become a shorthand means of determining the "importance" of a site per Google's algorithm.

Strong sites featuring relevant, information-rich and frequently-updated content, for example, typically bear a rank of 5-7. Yahoo's homepage has a PageRank of 10.

Google has said outdated numbers, bug-ridden updates and more are behind the impetus to drop PageRank from the Google Toolbar. The data will still exist, but simply not appear to Toolbar users.

Google also cites the use of PageRank as an incentive to trade links - a practice frowned-upon by Google - as more as people try to raise site scores.

Google's Adam Lasnk is asking people for input on how to make PageRank more useful. These include being useful to webmasters and non-webmasters alike.

PageRank plays a large role in search engine marketing as webmasters look to boost rankings in order to show up higher in search results.

With all the talk of "search wars" over the past year, you wouldn't expect to read a news story about the three major search engine competitors working together. But that is the case today. Google, Yahoo and MSN have joined forces to fight the comment spam that has become the plague of many bloggers.

What is comment spam? Think of it as an evolution of guestbook spam. Chances are you've seen it. Perhaps you've even been a victim of it. Luckily, the biggest names in the search engine and blog industries have caught onto it. Comment spam occurs when misguided webmasters, in an effort to raise their search engine rankings by increasing the number of backlinks pointing to their sites, begin posting random links to their sites as comments on other people's blog entries. Ironically, it would be a lot easier, less tedious and probably more effective for these spammers to just join a link exchange program and fully automate their link exchange efforts.

Google, Yahoo and MSN will now be incorporating a new attribute (rel="nofollow") that will tell their spiders to discredit links in blog comments so that spammers will get no benefit whatsoever.

Many of the leading providers of blog software have already agreed to participate, including LiveJournal, Blogger, and MSN Spaces.
